Since its founding in 1968, Auroville has developed significant ecological and social projects. The reforestation of the formerly desert-like areas laid the foundation for this integrated urban concept. Auroville offers education, research, culture, and attractive jobs, including for the surrounding population. One successful example is the Himalayan hand-knitting factory.
Fashionably speaking
With its hand-knitted collection, Himalaya takes an unconventional approach, far removed from the industrial mass production of the fashion industry. With a focus on loving craftsmanship, each garment is unique. From organic cotton sweaters in summer to wool jackets in winter, sustainability and social responsibility are a priority.

In spring and summer, cotton ribbons and linen blends dominate in classic hand-knitted garments, complemented by fine silk yarns in flat-knitted garments. High-quality wools are added for fall and winter.

In Tamil Nadu, a male-dominated society, it's not a given for women to earn their own money. Therefore, the workplace offers many women the opportunity to earn their own income for the first time, thus providing greater independence from their husbands.

The women in this project not only receive regular work, stable employment contracts and living wages, they
also receive bonus payments on public holidays and holiday pay during the holiday season.
The frame
Usually standard in Europe, but rare in India: employees have health insurance.
Insured
If that's not enough, the family is also automatically included in the health insurance plan. There is also a joint pension plan.
Flexible
Working from home. Satyavan invites us into her home and shows us how and where she lives. She spins the yarn in the courtyard while her grandchildren play in the garden next door.
Homework
By being able to work from home, she can organize her free time conveniently and as needed and complete all housework in a relaxed manner.

Anyone who's ever been to Auroville in spring knows this feeling: The scent of flowers fills the air, the atmosphere is charged with sweet energy, and the crickets are chirping. Our design team is always captivated by the surroundings and even feels a little wistful when it's time to leave.
